What is the relationship between gender, sexuality and citizenship, state formation, nationalism, and notions of modernity and culture? What is the role of gender in constructions of race and ethnicity? How do concepts of gender and sexuality serve as important tools for both liberal and non-liberal, democratic and non-democratic political regimes? How do gender relations inform everyday nationalist practices, and how does nationalism have a role in constructing gender relations? This course attempts to bring in the main theoretical and analytical concepts of gender and sexuality for understanding various aspects of nationalist discourses, formations of states and empires, and nation-building practices from both a comparative and a global/transnational analytical point of view. The course will look into various geographical contexts, while it will pay particular attention to cases of gender, sexuality and nationalism in the post-socialist Eastern European space.
