In this course, we will explore theories of gender socialization and development within the discipline of psychology and throughout related disciplines. Together we will discuss a number of historical and contemporary debates about the concept of gender, examining what gender is, how it’s constructed, by whom, and how we can make sense of its role in our psychological and social development. The course will focus on gender scholarship in developmental, cognitive, and social psychologies, critical and feminist psychologies, and psychoanalysis. We will also integrate interdisciplinary scholarship, including texts from from sociology, critical neuroscience, transgender studies, and queer studies.
