This course provides a foundation for understanding how race and racism, ethnicity and culture affect mental health. Topics include: identity development, immigration and acculturation, health disparities by race and ethnicity, forms of interpersonal racism, defining solidarity and allyship, cultural variation in expressions of distress, psychiatric classification of "mental illness": vs. culturally grounded explanations of symptoms. This is a participatory and experiential course in which discussion is facilitated through affinity groups, and you will do a group change maker project to work towards change in your community. Prerequisites: One Lang fundamentals course, or ULEC Introduction to Psychology with a grade of "C" or higher. *This course is open to Lang Psychology majors and minors only.
