Philosophical understandings of religion generally operate at a level of abstraction far removed from the oppressive and emancipatory realities of religion on the ground. Feminist theories and theologies have shown that such abstraction can reinforce oppressive dualities and hierarchies – especially gendered ones – while silencing traditions’ more liberatory potential. Engaging a range of western philosophers and theologians, both classical and contemporary, and posing questions from the nature of divinity to human actualization and evil, this course explores the potential of philosophy of religion to be a method of reinvention and rediscovery.
