Religious Iconographies in Latine Literature and Art

In this course we will look at depictions of religious and spiritual symbols, archives, and ritual in U.S. Latine literature and visual art. We will explore the relationships between religion, mythos, liberation theologies, and cultural theory by examining works by writers and artists such as Gloria AnzaldĂșa, Gil Cuadros, and Ana Mendieta. Special attention will be paid to the tensions and nuances that arise in queer and feminist artworks working through the relationships between Catholicism and colonial histories. This is a seminar+ course.
