When we hear the word “genie” in English, we tend to think of magical beings living in lamps. However, in Muslim thought, they are created by God out of smokeless fire, and are called “jinn.” There is a rich mythology of jinn across Muslim traditions; this course will focus especially on jinn stories written in the United States. Through the texts, we will understand the diversity of Muslim experiences around the world, the role myth plays in religious traditions, and the ways in which religion and culture interact.
