This course provides an introduction to the questions pursued in experimental film with regards to science: how to think mutation in images, how to present the vibrations of matter, the macro- and the microscopic? In the frame of the festival, students inhabit these problems and explore the relations between innovation and representation, between education and experiment, engaging with the materials at hand, meeting filmmakers and discovering their work, creating texts, interviews and essays, films and communications as a playful encounter between scientific and artistic configurations. In addition to on-site class meetings that include discussion and film screenings, students attend the Imagine Science Film Festival (Oct 18-25; student must build in time to attend 15 contact hours). The Festival is hosted by Imagine Science Films whose mission is to promote the intersection of the arts, sciences, through provocative documentary, fiction, animation, feature and short films and associated panel discussion and competitions. Today, these fields are exploring overlapping themes and methods, breaking boundaries, and creating new "contact zones." Students will attend presentations, participate in Science +Art + Design Lab workshops, and engage with the creation of various forms of cultural output for wider dissemination using formats such as Facebook Live Interviews, Twitter, Blogs, Response Papers, and articles for the New School Press. Students will have resources to review prior to the festival to ground the experience and on-campus class sessions to explore output possibilities. Students must commit to 4:00-9:00 PM on Friday, October 18, opening night. They will then attend other festival events throughout the week with film shorts being hosted on campus Oct 19-20.
