About 3.7 Billion years ago, life developed on the planet Earth. Since then, life has proliferated on the planet, developing into a robust diversity of life – plants, animals, fungi, and countless microscopic creatures – now many millions of species strong. A mere 200,000 years ago, a new species, Homo sapiens (humans), emerged. These strange animals were characterized by their remarkable intelligence and desire to understand their world. Together, they began to ask questions about the origin of life, and the study of evolution began. Evolution is not just the driving force causing species to change over time. It is also the strange, complicated story of life’s history and how all the species we know today, humans included, came to be. In this class, we will learn about the natural process of evolution, how it has shaped biology through history, and how it continues to impact our lives today. From genetically modified crops to antibiotic resistant bacteria to emerging strains of the SARS-COV-2 virus, evolution continues to play a critical part in our lives. We will learn about these concepts and pressing issues in our lives, and more, through a combination of lectures, assigned readings and class discussions. This course satisfies the approved 2000-level foundation requirement or the elective requirement for the IS major. For the IS minor, this course satisfies the foundation requirement.
