Water Quality Lab

Spring 2022

Taught By: Bhawani Venkataraman

Section: A

CRN: 10944

Credits: 4

While water is essential to life, safe drinking water is vital to the health, social, and economic well-being of a community. Through experiments and readings, this laboratory course explores the chemistry of water and why the delivery of safe drinking water is a complex process. Lab experiments will examine techniques for measuring levels of contaminants in water to assess drinking water quality and the importance of experimental design and data quality in making decisions on water quality. Experiments will also investigate the chemistry of water purification systems. The class will end in a project that includes collecting water samples from a local body of water and assessing its water quality. The course aims to demonstrate why the chemistry of water should inform scientific and engineering systems and policies to ensure sustainable and equitable access to safe drinking water. This course satisfies the Laboratory Science requirement for the Interdisciplinary Science major and minor and the Natural Sciences subject area for the Environmental Studies major. Prerequisite: LSCI 2500 Chemistry of the Environment (or an equivalent undergraduate chemistry course).
