Fall 2020

Taught By: Bhawani Venkataraman

Section: A

CRN: 4337

Credits: 4

Earth’s atmosphere has undergone significant changes over its history, resulting in the loss of species as well as allowing new species to evolve. Since the age of humans, the atmosphere has changed in ways unprecedented in Earth’s history. By discussing the chemistry of the atmosphere, this class will illuminate the significance of the atmosphere in supporting life on earth as well as the impact of human activity on this chemistry. Topics will include the chemistry of acid rain and air pollution, stratospheric ozone depletion, and climate change. The class will apply fundamental chemical principles to understand these topics and will look at the role of chemical research in informing policies and actions that address these environmental challenges. This course satisfies the Intermediate level requirement for the Interdisciplinary Science major. Pre-requisites: Chemistry of the Environment (or an equivalent undergraduate chemistry course)
