Credits: 4
It is a curious irony that we live in market society without being sure how and whether markets work. This course aims at introducing students to the sociology of markets and monies. First, we look at the emergence of social studies of markets and economies. Second, we review the empirical work on the devices, competencies, networks, discourses, performativity of modern sciences, human and non-human actors, collective and individual actants that contribute to the making and maintaining of markets. Finally, we focus on monies, their making, circulation and valuation with a particular attention to the sociology of blockchains and crypto-currencies such as Bitcoin.
