This course explores Western dramatic literature of the Modern Era, from approximately 1870 to 1980 with specific emphasis on varying approaches to the stage environment and issues of presentation. We will address several alternative modes of theatrical development in overlapping sections: The Birth and Growth of Realism; Expressionism and Epic drama; The Impulse of the Avant-Garde; and Post-War Challenges to Structure and Form. Each section will proceed chronologically exploring core texts. The emphasis will be on dramaturgical analysis of plays as vehicles for performance and placing theatrical practice within a broader cultural continuum. Teaching will be through a combination of lecture, discussion and engaged exercises. This course fulfills the dramatic literature requirement for Theater majors and minors.
