This course explores dramatic literature of the last 50 years, outlining major trends in theatrical work from the period after Modernism. Each play and playwright will be discussed in cultural context to provide a basis for understanding dramatic literature as a literary art and as a vehicle for performance. Work will focus on plays that reflect the current political moment, considering themes of racial and gendered construction in particular. Plays will be analyzed through critical reading, performance practice, and selected video and live performance when available. Students will work to establish critical faculties in discussion and participation in class exercises and through a series of short papers on individual plays. This course fulfills the dramatic literature requirement for Theater majors/minors. For this course, the students need only a laptop with a working camera or an external webcam (no preference) and a reliable high-speed internet connection.
