Fall 2019

Taught By: Pamela Thielman

Section: AX

CRN: 7367

Credits: 4

Costume design is not solely a craft. It begins with a conceptualist point of view that encompasses elements ranging from art, history, culture, politics, aesthetics (shape, color, texture, movement, architecture) and dramaturgy. This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of costume design for theatre, opera, dance and film. Students will investigate costume design though character analysis, visual research techniques, play analysis, costume plots, drawing and sketching, color, fabrics, costume history, and practical applications. All students will be required to develop methods of visual communication. You will be assisted in this through technical recommendations and feedback in class.
