This course surveys the history of scenic and costume design for the theatre. While the focus will be primarily on the Western tradition, that is, those practices descending from the ancient Greek theatre, attention will be paid to other traditions when possible. Throughout the semester students will read about and look at examples of works representing major trends and significant figures from the field of theatre design. These examples will be considered within their theatrical contexts, as well as in cultural, social, and political contexts.
