This course explores LGBTQ identity and representation in a diverse range of dramatic forms across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Framing drama around queer theory and analysis, we will consider both literary and performance styles across a diverse range of cultural locations and intersectional identities connecting queerness to race, gender, age, and class. Throughout the course, we will work to subvert the traditional theatrical and dramatic canon by focusing on queer voices and representations which have often been silenced or marginalized while also challenging the categorizations of various types of LGBTQ identities as they have been defined over time, especially with regards to trans* and non-binary identities. Through discussions, close reading, presentations, and written assignments, students will analyze queer drama in relation to theories of gender and sexuality, queer studies, performance studies, and cultural politics. Playwrights surveyed will include Oscar Wilde, Lillian Hellman, Mart Crowley, Maria Irene Fornes, Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, Paula Vogel, Adrienne Kennedy, Tony Kushner, Robert O'Hara, Terrence McNally, Taylor Mac, and Donja R. Love, among others. This course fulfills the Dramatic Literature requirement for Theater Majors and Minors.
