Credits: 4
NYC On Stage explores over 175 years of plays and musicals set in New York City where the city itself is an integral and important character in the story. Students will consider how this ever changing metropolis has been represented and helped shape narrative storytelling in theater productions both past and present. Plays and musicals will include Anna Mowatt's Fashion, The Streets of New York, On the Town, O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh, Albee's The Zoo Story, Leroi Jones Dutchman, Rent, In the Heights, The Lehman Trilogy and BLKS by Aziza Barnes. The class also contextualizes the works through the city’s history. Students will create final projects for the class. The coursework may also include guest speakers, and/or visits to selected performances, exhibits, and venues. This course fulfills the dramatic literature and an elective requirement for Theater majors and minors.
