In this scene study course, students will be introduced to the primary elements of acting while exploring the process of creating characters through observation, improvisation, and research. By taking a physical approach to acting, students will focus on plays uncovering sociopolitical issues that affect us all. The class will collaborate with legendary theater organization La MaMa, which has been home to many revolutionary pieces from around the world. Course material will include the political plays of theater makers and groups such as Adrienne Kennedy, Amir Baraka, Spiderwoman American Indigenous Performance Troup, Belarus Free Theater, Motus, Living Theater and Actors Without Borders- ITONY. The class will meet with guest performers, directors and producers to create a space for critical dialogue about the mission of political plays in the world. This course fulfills an elective requirement for Theater majors and minors.
