Dramatic Literature & the Body

Spring 2022

Taught By: Christine Giancatarino

Section: AX

CRN: 10784

Credits: 4

This course explores the dramaturgy of the body and investigates how the body or “soma” serves as a critical component in constructing meaning in performance texts. Throughout the semester we will consider how embodied dramaturgy functions as a dynamic approach necessary to both understanding and de/constructing texts. We will read a selection of plays, such as Five Days in March by Toshiki Okada, The Hip-Hop Waltz of Eurydice by Reza Abdoh, Father Comes Home from the Wars by Suzan Lori Parks, bringing particular attention to the way the body somatically constructs meaning. In addition, we will explore a range of supporting materials – including acting and dramaturgical theories, as well as somatic practices, specifically the Feldenkrais Method – to help us position the body at the center of these texts. Through a series of discussions, small lectures, and engaged exercises we will investigate how our somatic-selves can become fuller participants in understanding the structures and worlds of plays and performance. As a Seminar + course, we will attend two performances and one somatic workshop in addition to our weekly class meetings. This course fulfills the dramatic literature requirement for Theater majors and minors.
