System of Dante's Hell

Spring 2019

Taught By: Victor Peterson

Section: A

CRN: 7383

Credits: 4

This course analyzes the role of LeRoi Jones’ (Amiri Baraka), The System of Dante’s Hell, in formalizing a philosophy of Black expression. Connecting his literary work to the plays in which Jones employs his countercultural praxis, we will trace this endowment to Jennifer Jazz - a black essayist, playwright, and punk. The articulation of social movements through the mechanism Jones conceives in Dante’s Hell, links uptown Black Fire!! to downtown Punk.
