This course examines the historical and contemporary use of film, video, and interactive technology in live art, theater, and performance. Investigating different techniques and technologies, students will become familiar with how design principals go hand in hand with the systems required to execute a successful design. Students will explore the history and evolving aesthetic language as well as the tools of multimedia designers while exploring the narrative and conceptual relationships between the body, media, and space. The course covers the historical intersection of performance and the moving image in an overview that ranges from 20th century art movements such as Dada and Fluxus and culminates with current experiments in projection mapping and 3D. This seminar involves reading, writing, critical response, screenings, guest lecturers, and theater viewing assignments that culminate in a final collaborative project on multimedia design. Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of Macintosh or Windows Systems. Some knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Pro is recommended but not required. This course fulfills an elective requirement for Theater majors and minors.
