This course focuses on the art-science and philosophy of stage direction, specifically paying attention to the role of the post-dramatic theater during the course of the 20th century and beyond. Students will learn directing and acting terminology and how to apply it to scene work with actors in rehearsals. Through this hands on process, they will be deepening their understanding of time, space, text and movement while engaging with the materials of the artists operating within the boundaries of the term “postdramatic theatre” such as playwrights, Peter Handke, Heiner Müller, Elfriede Jelinek, the work of directors, Robert Wilson, Robert Lepage, Jan Lauwers, Pina Bausch and theatre companies, the Wooster Group, Forced Entertainment, Theatre de Complicite, Societas Raffaello Sanzio, Elevator Repair Service and Gob Squad. This upper-level course is restricted to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
