In this intensive weekend workshop, students will have the opportunity of working with acclaimed theatre director Anne Bogart and be exposed to her unique approach to storytelling for our time. “The stories that we tell determine nothing less than personal destiny,” asserts Bogart in her book What’s the Story. Students in this workshop with the founder of SITI Company--one of the country’s most influential and compelling theater ensembles--will be immersed in the practice of active storytelling as a form of both theatrical and social engagement, proposing to the world alternate ways for a society to organize itself. Over the course of a long weekend, students will engage in discourse and exercises exploring key concepts in Bogart’s philosophy of dynamic narrative. These include “narrative,” “error,” “limits,” “opposition,” “arrest,” “empathy,” “collaboration,” and “politics.” These will occur in the context of SITI Company. The workshop will culminate in a public presentation entitled “Quantum Entanglements,” referring to personal narratives that overlap and weave together. One of SITI’s philosophical keystones is that “The theatre is a gymnasium for the soul.” Participants in this class will get an intense workout.
