Eugene Lang College Lib Arts: The Arts
CRN: 14831
Credits: 4
What IS a photograph? What are the claims made for the photograph - the beliefs, the fantasies, and ideologies that support the theorizations and practices of photography? What is a photographic imaginary and how has it changed over different technologies, techniques, media, and spaces of producing and encountering a photographic image? This course will address work through writings on photography, from early descriptions of the camera obscura, the discoveries of photochemistry and the daguerrotype, the development of mass reproducibility and the photographic archive, to recent discussions of the digital image and virtual space. In-class discussion of readings will be supplemented by visits to exhibitions, screenings, performances, and talks by guest speakers.
