With New York City as our classroom, we will visit a wide range galleries and outdoor exhibition sites. From the Bronx to Brooklyn, we will consider artworks and the conditions that frame our experience of visual art. How, when, and where do we spend time with art? In what ways do viewing conditions and exhibition contexts impact, inform, and support our interpretation of contemporary art practice? In addition to these questions, we will interrogate our viewing habits and patterns. What does it mean to look closely at an artwork? We will explore these questions and encounters thoroughly by keeping an observation notebook. This course is organized around weekly class trips and requires travel time.
