Art After the Computer Age

Fall 2021

Taught By: Jeannine Tang

Section: A

CRN: 12074

Credits: 4

This course surveys contemporary art, computational cultures and their material realities at the turn of the twenty-first century. While introducing early twentieth-century algorithmic art and analogue computing, the course emphasizes artistic uses of programming and cybernetics after the 1960s, the effects of personal computing and cyberspace after the 1980s, and today’s dispersion of art across semantic technologies and the internet of things. International debates on race and sex are foregrounded across systems aesthetics, multi-media installation, and post-internet production. We will ask how artists reconceived imaging and identity, eroticism and sex, labor and commerce, subculture and sociality, as computing became ubiquitous in everyday life. How have computational media and the internet affected art’s production, presentation and discourse? Why did artists hack code, infrastructure, and machine—to what effects upon space and time, nation-state and sovereign territory, concepts and distributions of resource and property? Examining a range of media, exhibitions and programs, we will study work by micha cárdenas, Shu Lea Cheang, Stephanie Dinkins, Chitra Ganesh and Mariam Ghani, Tishan Hsu, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Julia Scher, Mongrel, Mendi + Keith Obadike, Antonio Muntadas, Jayson Scott Musson, Legacy Russell, Lilian Schwartz, Sandy Stone, Sarai, subRosa, Wen-Ying Tsai,, among others.
