Global Lens:Trans-Cul. Photog.
Taught By: Goodweather Kessler, Shari
This course introduces the student to visual media in diverse world cultures. We examine how different cultures ‘frame’ themselves in photography and film and how camera-work re-presents the “picture” of a culture. We explore a spectrum of motivations and expressions as seen through the eyes of photographers, comparing and contrasting the image-makers’ work from both inside and outside of various world cultures, with emphasis on the content and intent of photographs from diverse cultural identities. Through films and photographs, we will analyze the political, social and cultural context of the photographic culture in the US, Latin America, Asia and Africa. The goal of the course is to gain new knowledge about the role photography plays in creating and influencing perceptions of our multicultural world.
