This course is an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of transgender studies. Focusing mostly on the United States, we will explore the concept of trans as well as experiences of trans folks in historical, cultural, legal, social, political, psychological, and medical contexts. Throughout the course, we will explore the following questions: What is trans studies? How does the concept of trans impact our understanding of sexuality, gender, and biological sex? What are the consequences of using the terms “transgender” and “trans” cross-culturally? What is the significance of the institutionalization of trans studies as a field of study?
