Sound Experiments
Schools of Public Engagement: Media
CRN: 14314
Credits: 3
Students explore the process and possibilities of experimental sound-making with a distinct ear towards radio-centered 'broadcast' realms. By critically exploring work by sound-rich storytellers as well as emergent mediated spaces, students engage in their own experiments. We investigate form, content and media vehicles, and, in the process, consider the conventions of transmission artistry, broadcasting and podcasting (ongoing, episodic and discrete programming). Using the same content (one or several interviews), students produce three short finished pieces to discern how the material sounds as documentary, impressionist narrative and audio artistry/fiction. These short productions expand towards the final "capstone" project and must demonstrate mastery of narrative and production skills. Students finish the term with three polished short works and one longer narrative production eligible for presentation across various media platforms. By exploring the same content/material in various genres, students are better able to discern what the story warrants. Is documentary the best vehicle or are there possibilities of weaving fictional strands or impressionist elements into the mix? Students are expected to work individually and engage in numerous workshop critiques on all projects. Discussions around radio construction invite engagement into the numerous relationships within radiophonic media, including terrestrial, streaming, independent podcasts, and lo-fi renegade radio. The class is designed for those with basic audio production skills and access to tools (on-site at The New School labs or via their own computer/audio set-up).
