Seeing Race in Transnational

Fall 2018

Taught By: Sumita Chakravarty

Section: A

CRN: 7520

Credits: 3

This course explores the nature and impact of media globalization through the lens of race. It examines the cross-border flow of ideas and images about race to ask: What are the dominant paradigms in the stories about racial others that circulate in the world today? What frameworks are employed to visualize difference? How is the racial body enacted and interpreted? How are political, social, and moral attitudes shaped by such images and narratives? And what is the potential for alternatives to racist ways of seeing and knowing? Situating these questions in the long histories of racial representations and conventions, we will work with specific examples that lead us to the embattled nature of racial thinking today. Students in the class learn through readings and discussions, visual analysis, and creative multimedia projects of their own design. The goal of the course is to arrive at new insights into the media politics of race in the transnational era. Readings are interdisciplinary and include thinkers and scholars on the topic of race and media such as Poole, Shohat/Stam, Hall, Hooks, Nakamura, Coates, Kim, Mankekar, and several others.

Media Studies courses are open to all graduate students. Undergraduate Juniors and Seniors with permission from the instructor and BA/MA Media studies students should email mediastudiesadvising@newschool.edu for access.
