Digital Democracy Forum
Spring 2023
Taught By: Trebor Scholz
Section: A

CRN: 13827

Credits: 3

Long hailed as a democratic tool, the internet is now a tool for private economic interests. This forum brings together researchers, artists, policymakers, labor leaders, and technologists at the forefront of efforts to construct a democratic internet. What challenges do we face, and how do we overcome them? Lectures, workshops, stakeholder meetings and tech-meetups will focus on data cooperatives, tech worker resistance, distributed technologies, fair work and cooperative principles, social media, and community ownership of digital platforms. The format of the online forum consists of four public lectures, four sessions with communities of practitioners focusing on "Mutual Aid and Technology," and seven seminar-style sessions exclusively for course participants. The forum's goal is to provide a venue for people to share their knowledge and skills about technology and cooperative principles . The sessions cover topics such as Shared Digital Infrastructure, New Municipalism, and Distributed Technologies. The forum hopes to create a more equitable world by allowing people to learn from one another. Join in the fight for a democratic internet!
