2019 will mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Africans in Jamestown to be sold into bondage. While there was inequality before this event, African slavery became the organizing force for inequality in the US, eventually encoded into the US Constitution as instructions that the census count slaves as 3/5’s of a person. Inequality has been constantly contested without being fully eradicated. This anniversary offers an opportunity to the spirit of inquiry and the solemnity of commemoration to this dynamic process. This course will explore the experiences of the 400 years through readings, films, speakers and discussion. Meets the Making a Difference Requirement for EPSM, NPM, OCM.
