Short nonfiction, as both finished work and scaffolding for compression, lyricism, and experimentation in longer prose narratives is widely written and read today. This course explores a variety of short (500-2000 words) creative nonfiction forms including memoir/personal essay, argument, social commentary, meditation, reflection, criticism, and cross-genre hybrids. Workshop participants will read short form nonfiction essays and will write and critique eight short (500-750 words) original works and two longer (2000 word) essay. Close reading of assigned texts and classmates’ work will address nonfiction prose-writing craft as well as the more specific aspects of the compressed short form nonfiction essay. A variety of print and online publications will be introduced, and students will identify several areas of focus for individual submissions.
