Writing & Meditation

Spring 2020

Taught By: Lisa Freedman

Section: A

CRN: 5682

Credits: 2

This class embraces “starting in silence,” both literally and figuratively. Weeks one and two focus on meditation instruction; all ten sessions include a period or periods of meditation; and students meditate on their own before they dive in to the weekly homework exercises. We explore different ways of thinking about silence: as womb, as something to break through, and as beginner’s mind or a fresh start. The notion of exploration and journey works with the notion of silence to shape the flow of the sessions. We read John Edgar Wideman, Jane Hirshfield, Dionne Brand, Ethan Nichtern, Susan Griffin and others.
