The New School Workshop: Poetry
Schools of Public Engagement: Writing Program
CRN: 15832
Credits: 3
Be a part of the history of writing and writers at The New School. From 1927 to 1931, the creative writing workshop evolved at The New School into what would become the first academic workshop in creative writing. In this signature workshop, students generate new material and read literature like writers. Special attention is paid to professional questions about publishing, collaboration, and building a life as an artist. Professor J. Mae Barizo of the MFA in Creative Writing at The New School, author of two books of poetry, The Cumulus Effect and Tender Machines, and On Becoming Hybrid, essays on inclusivity and hybrid writing, will work with students toward strategies for revision, formal exploration, and deepening their poetic practice as socially-engaged participants of their literary communities.
