Design and Language

Fall 2019

Taught By: Glenn Adamson

Section: A

CRN: 5863

Credits: 3

This course will be offered as a two-week intensive seminar in which we will focus on the intersection between design and language. Our particular focus will be on critical and historical writing -- we will read and discuss outstanding texts in various genres (reviews, historical accounts, biographies, manifestos, practice-based statements, etc.), focusing as much on technique as subject matter. Students will be asked to write a number of short assignments in different voices, developing their own essayistic and critical skills. One session will be devoted to public speaking skills as particularly applied to design topics. Alongside this, we will also explore the historiography of the fields of design criticism and design history, establishing an understanding of its own progression, key formative figures, and intellectual bases. Finally, we will have a session on the use of language within design – in the context of graphics and objects. Practice-based students with an interest in developing their writing are also encouraged to enroll in the course.
