Biomaterials grown from microbes and fungi are revolutionizing the material supply chain by providing sustainable alternatives to such problematic substances as wood composites, plastic and leather. They have already found applications in the fashion, packaging, and building materials industries as well as providing inspiration for artists. Biomaterials Studio will introduce students to some of the basic methodologies of culturing and creating with a range of fungi and microbes. We will grow mycelium from different mushroom species on common waste materials and cast them into useful and decorative forms. We'll culture sheet materials such as kombucha 'leather' and fungal/algal biofilm to examine their potential to replace leather, textiles and wood-based paper. We'll work with the amazingly intelligent slime mold to carry out simple biocomputing experiments and watch it solve complex problems without a brain or a nervous system. This will be a making-centered course where students are encouraged to innovate and develop new protocols, applying their findings to their individual creative practice. There will be regular work-in-progress sessions, knowledge sharing, and critiques. The course will be of particular interest to art and design students who are self-directed, open to experimentation, and eager to expand our collective knowledge of techniques at the forefront of sustainability.

Open to: All university undergraduate degree students. Pre-requisite(s): first-year university writing course and at least two prior history or methods course in art, media, film, or visual culture. One of these courses should be 3000-level.
