{ "courseDescription": "In this hands-on fine arts course, students explore a variety of drawing and painting techniques. Students meet online daily with Parsons faculty and an international cohort of peers for real-time creative and technical instruction, project guidance, and group and individual critiques. Starting with introductory exercises, students learn how to use drawing to think visually, investigate ideas, and express messages clearly. The course quickly progresses to the basics of painting, focusing on materials, color, composition, and studio practices. Real-time class discussions and one-on-one meetings with Parsons faculty provide students with opportunities to discuss formal elements, art history precedents, and their own process. This exploratory course incorporates structured “away time” from the computer in which students investigate world events, social issues, and personal interests as a springboard for inspiration, art direction, and production. Students use their sketchbooks to draw, journal, and document their surroundings and learning experiences. Throughout the course, students complete a series of observations, portraits, landscapes, and imaginative pieces, creating a body of work that is uniquely theirs and that can be used in a portfolio.", "countsTowards": "", "countsTowardsLink": "", "willLearn": "Show an understanding of the virtual art studio environment and practice by participating in a variety of synchronous (real-time interaction) and asynchronous (structured \"away-time\") activities including lectures, demos, and discussions; individual and collaborative exercises and projects; and self and peer critiques.\nGain a deeper understanding of the practice and application of primary and secondary research and its impact on creative and technical processes, including themes derived from observing and interpreting world events, social issues, and personal experiences.\nDemonstrate an understanding of the iterative creative process by maintaining analog and/or digital process journals/sketchbooks documenting research, ideation studies, resolved art, commentary, and self-reflection.\nAcquire the skills to create and curate a cohesive body of artwork that supports a visual narrative expressive of an individual and evolving art identity.\nDemonstrate a conceptual and applied understanding of visual elements such as composition, line, shape, scale, texture, value, color, and point-of-view.\nUnderstand the diverse ways to approach drawing and painting and be able to apply strategic methods and materials to accomplish a particular goal.\nDemonstrate the thoughtful development of individual ideas and thematic concepts to translate insights into visual form.
