This hands-on design strategies course introduces students to the creative impact of design thinking and practices on business development and management, emphasizing the relationships between design, experience, and social and economic change. Students meet online 4 days per week over a 4 week period with Parsons faculty and an international cohort of peers for real-time instruction, project guidance, and group and individual critiques. Live instruction is supplemented with digitally archived project support and reference resources. This exploratory design strategies course incorporates structured “away time” from the computer in which students investigate world events, social issues, and personal experiences and interests as a springboard for creative inspiration, direction, and project development. Students learn the fundamentals of primary and secondary research, written and visual analysis, innovative ideation processes, visual presentation, and rapid-prototyping techniques to develop design-led strategies and solutions for creative industries. Digital tools, including the Adobe Creative Cloud, are introduced. The four-week experience includes guest speakers from industry and virtual field trips. From the start of the course students keep an online journal to document their research and creative processes. Students will participate in a series of individual and collaborative design strategy exercises to inform their design and presentation of an innovative idea or approach to product development, marketing and PR, systems design, and-or creative service.
