Credits: 3

In this Critical Studio, students will examine the potential for illustration, animation, games and design to tell stories about mental health. What are the difficulties of communication that we are uniquely able to solve? How do we go about telling our own mental health stories? How do we help to insure that marginalized voices are heard? What are the political issues that impact the discussion of mental health? The elective will have a theoretical and research based element in which we will consider the tropes and clichés surrounding visual discussions of mental health. We will examine the unique opportunities offered to visual practitioners to discuss mental health in a nuanced and valuable way. Students will identify a design or communication need relating to issues of mental health and create a body of work that seeks to address this need.
