This advanced, studio-based course explores the relationship of photography and performance. Students explore various notions of representation and the use of the self and/or surrogates in performances for the camera. Other issues and genres explored include the constructed image, the fictional image, gender and sexuality, metaphor, fantasy, identity construction, and masquerade. Students complete practical and conceptual assignments during the course of the semester as well as a written proposal for a final project based on the readings, lectures, discussions and critiques presented during each class. Additionally, the class involves reading about the history of Performance art and its relationship with Photography, and its influence on contemporary photographers.
