This studio will focus on the development of hardware interfaces and interactive games, exploring the relationship between the controller and the facilitation of playful experiences. We will work with and follow the example of independent games organization Babycastles, building works that imagine an alternate history of the arcade, one focused on unique, expressive, and social interactions. Lectures will focus on game programming workshops, outlines and overviews of hardware techniques, and consideration of historical and contemporary approaches to the game interface. Assignments will consist of readings, research, ideation, prototypes, and a polished final project. Experience in at least one of the following is essential: game programming, physical computing, or physical fabrication.

Open to University Graduate Students and and upper-level undergraduate degree students. Others by permission of the program.
