This course is a primer on our perceptions of luxury, and the strategies in place that have constructed the current and evolving concept of luxury. Through research, lectures, guest speakers and workshops, students will gain insight into the history and present-day innovations behind traditional and emerging luxury brands. This course will explore craft and production, supply chains, communication, distribution, and business models/ structures to better understand how luxury companies are positioned in the market. Through a series of guest speakers, we will hear directly from professionals on topics relating to the value, codes and culture of particular luxury companies. Students will also engage in collaborative ideation workshops in which they will work as a team to imagine the future of luxury in a critical, speculative way.
