AI, Metaverse, and the Future of Fashion
Parsons School of Design: Design Strategies
CRN: 13793
Credits: 3
Each week, a new hashtag promises to disrupt the fashion industry: NFT, Machine Learning, Mixed Reality, 3D Fashion Shows, etc. What is the future of the fashion industry and fashion shows? How can established and emerging designers gain visibility and awareness, and leverage the potential of new technologies? Can we make fashion more democratic using new technologies as a medium to communicate and express our narrative as designers? In 2019, NY, London, Milan, and Paris fashion weeks emitted 241,000 tons of CO2, the equivalent to lighting Times Square for 58 years. The fashion industry is long overdue for systems change. What other tools exist for brands to present collections and consumers to interact with designers’ work? In the midst of the fast-transforming technological landscape, it is imperative to engage with emerging tools that afford opportunities to reexamine the existing paradigm and use fashion as a design intervention for equity, sustainability, and social justice. This interdisciplinary studio class will examine the current practice and potential application of emerging technologies from a multidisciplinary perspective - from fashion, design, art, management, design strategy, activism, computer science, and new media. Students will engage with critical reading, multi-media content, and technological tools on the subject, and apply their learnings into projects reflective of their interests using design research methodologies. Their insights can be applied to artistic and creative practice, and management strategies for corporate and social innovation. No programming experience is required for this course; all disciplinary backgrounds are welcomed.
