Open Source Fashion

Spring 2019

Taught By: Hans Otto Von Busch

Section: A

CRN: 6835

Credits: 3

In this course we will start envision how fashion can be shared amongst users and community members as an open technology of the self, a protocol distributed by the designer which gives users the rights to study, change, and distribute their fashion to anyone and for any purpose. Student will test to develop their designs in a collaborative and public manner. More specifically we will examine ways to tackle the basic paradox emerging from the clash between the perceived exclusivity of fashion versus the inclusive formats of open source. Through design research, conceptualization, iterations, and development, students will produce a proposal for an open source platform for fashion. This new platform should address, confront, and in some way resolve the conflict between exclusion and inclusion in fashion and offer a visionary trajectory for future fashion design.
