Evolving social norms, demographic changes, political and racial unrest, and health and climate disasters require reimagining how we care for each other within communities and organizations. In this course, we will creatively and critically explore approaches that promote collective wellness, mutualism, and inclusion within these varied contexts. Carelab is focused on the transformation of mindsets and narratives, capitalist gendered, racialized, ableist and ageist protocols, social and civic infrastructures, and organizational practices and models to enable the equitable distribution of care in society. This hands-on art and design strategy learning lab will use diverse methods such as community-engaged, speculative and strategic design, and social practice art to prototype interventions to prioritize care in society. Design, performance, media, and other creative making experience desirable. The two sections will meet in the same classroom for the entire semester.
