Global Urban Studio Intensive: Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen includes a week-long January 2018 travel to the Pearl River Delta. Given the global patterns of migrant mobilities, and the precarious context of political uncertainties in South-East Asia, our task in Spring 2018 is to study practices and processes of production and appropriation of public space as well as of other public resources, and to design strategies and scenarios for reframing the flows of transitory migrant communities to the Pearl River Delta. Specific emphasis will be placed on Hong Kong, with expert-led field trips to Macau and Shenzhen. During the design workshop at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (January 10-19, 2018), The New School students will work together with graduate students in Urban Environments Design at The HK Poly School of Design. In addition to the intensive workshop and travel in the Pearl River Delta, this class will meet four additional times between January and May 2018, on Fridays 3:50-6:30pm, in order to finalize design proposals created during the January workshop. Students will receive grades and 3 credits in May 2018. Students must cover cost of their airfare, accommodation, and food.
