Olfactive, Haptic & Somatic

Spring 2020

Taught By: Beau Rhee

Section: A

CRN: 7712

Credits: 3

In a culture where the visual overpowers, what do the olfactive, haptic and other senses mean in art & design today? How can these other senses be understood culturally and philosophically? How could these senses be incorporated into creative practice? In this seminar, we will examine a wide array of essays, experiential/ephemeral projects, scents, art and design works that offer insight into the somatic and haptic. These terms are broadly approached as tools for research and tools for generating work. The key concepts of the course are also contextualized in terms of biocentrism and sustainability. This seminar course is lecture & discussion based, culminating in an individually designed research project.
