This course takes a deep look at the way that sound behaves in space and provides an introduction to immersive sonic experiences. The class begins by creating sound for headphones, the media listening environment that we are most familiar with, and culminates in a spatial project that surrounds a listener in a real space using multiple speakers. Sound and Space focuses on the use of Adobe Audition for stereo and 5.1 surround as well as various techniques for recording and editing audio, mixing, and working with multi-speaker arrays. The activities of the class are grounded in a basic introduction to auditory perception, the behavior of sound in the natural and built environment, and precedents in art, architecture, technology and music.
