This class provides an overview and an introduction to the fundamentals of strategic design and management, including the intersecting domains of design, marketing, management, and social sciences -- all fundamental to the practice of design and management. The course will be comprised of a variety of immersive hands-on projects and exercises, drawing upon studio and seminar methods, to explore the industry’s scope, research practices and strategies, design processes, and approaches to implementation. Through critical readings and discussions, case studies, and practice-based projects students will consider the variety of ways that design functions in business contexts and consider the roles designers play in creative industries. Students will develop their research, prototyping, experimentation, self-reflection, and decision-making abilities in order to become resourceful practitioners and creative entrepreneurs. Seminars will be based on readings, lectures, and class discussions focusing on key concepts, frameworks and examples from a specific topic. Studios and fieldwork will involve students in hands on activities to apply techniques and strategies to design new concepts and ideas.
